M. Sophia Newman is a writer whose work has appeared in The Atlantic, Religion & Politics, Tricycle, Vox, Tin House, Literary Hub, and many other media outlets. Sophia has reported from Bangladesh, India, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, France, and the US, and has received support for her work from the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, the Awesome Foundation for Journalism, and the Shannon Fellowship program of the International Thomas Merton Society. She is an alumna of a writer's retreat at Collegeville Institute, was runner-up in Ruminate Magazine's 2017 VanderMey Nonfiction Prize, and wrote a weekly column (2015-2016) on global health innovations for Next City. She is currently a features writer and speechwriter at the American College of Surgeons.

Sophia has also worked as a technical writer for Illinois Medicaid, a manuscript editor at JAMA Network, and a global health specialist at the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sophia was a Fulbright scholar to Bangladesh, during which she authored five global health research studies. She holds a bachelor's degree in cell and molecular biology (Tulane University), a master's degree in public health (University of Illinois), and a certificate in global mental health (Harvard).
